Shamelessly rapping over hard-hitting club beats, Shygirl hit the ground running with her debut EP Cruel Practice in 2018. Since then, she has collaborated with the likes of Lady Gaga and Arca, and is now releasing her first album. On production duties is her friend Sega Bodega, with whom she founded the label Nuxxe (alongside two Frenchwomen, in Coucou Chloé and Oklou). Bodega was the one who pushed her to take to the microphone in the first place, despite showing no prior artistic inclinations. Having now set dancefloors alight, this album sees a more sensitive side to Shygirl, from graceful moments such as ‘Honey’ to the jungle beats found on the sublime, spine-tingling finale ‘Wildfire’. Among the features, look out for Arca’s signature industrial drums on ‘Come for Me’, and for Mura Masa on ‘Nike’. The latter is a Megan Thee Stallion-type track, with super simple, super heavy beats, a little bell in the background and a throbbing siren – guaranteed to get you moving. Bodega’s productions shine brightest, however. Between the chill of ‘Coochie (a bedtime story)’, the crazy chopped guitar riff on the single ‘Firefly’, or the ravey synths on ‘Poison’, a staggering mix of genres is produced that cements Shygirl as a major player of the 20s.
