详细介绍:

Gaétan Jarry’s spectacular, intense gestures and steadfast commitment always imbues his musicians with real vitality. This magnificent album is no different, with the soloists, choir and orchestra being carried along the vocal and instrumental coils of Rameau’s grands motets.

Rameau never had an official function as a composer of religious music and his contribution in this field is small in number, though great in quality. However, the four motets he did write pose a few issues. Written in the composer’s younger years, they feature inconsistent writing, as if several hands were involved in creating them. The originals have nearly entirely disappeared, with later versions being almost all that remain—meaning they’ve often been reworked and are sometimes incomplete.

Likely composed around 1720, Quam dilecta features two accomplished fugues which boast a rigourous writing style that’s rather rare in French music. The seven numbers of the motet In convertendo present notable differences in style that raise many questions for historians. Nonetheless, the music finds a noble and sincere expression, especially in the last two movements that contain some of the most beautiful passages ever composed by Rameau. Laboravi clamans is the only motet that was published during Rameau’s lifetime, and he included it in his 1722 “Traité de l’harmonie” (Treatise on Harmony). Its brevity suggests that this single movement may have belonged to a motet that has since been lost. Deus noster refugium is a true French-style “grand motet”. With its rich and varied movements, it represents the composers largest religious work. On top of that, it hints at the lyrical compositions that would later bring Rameau fame. © François Hudry/Qobuz
