详细介绍:

We all remember the amazing Step Up for the Cool Cats and the dazzling success story of Palma Violets, who were destined to take over from The Libertines. With their first album, 180, released in 2013 by Rough Trade, the four Londoners won the Best New Band award at the NME Awards and opened for Miles Kane. But then, only one album later, the rock combo broke up, to the great displeasure of an already hardened and now lonely fanbase. Gently Tender is in some senses the second coming of Palma Violets, without Chilli Jesson on bass who left to form Crewel Intentions. Jesson was replaced with Celia Archer (also keyboardist) of the all female four-piece The Big Moon as well as guitarist Adam Brown. Five years in the making, Take Hold of Your Promise! changes gear. The fiery and passionate rock inspired by The Clash and Nick Cave makes way for folk, soul and choral singing. Production is handled by the soulful Matthew E. White, the perfect candidate to pull off this mix of genres, who traveled during the pandemic from Richmond, Virginia to Rockfield Studios in Wales.

Like lots of people I had spent many hours reflecting on the togetherness of our existence pre-pandemic.” – Sam Fryer (singer).

The five-piece naturally chose to deploy these aspirational anthems with melodies inspired by 70s psychedelic folk, such as that of The Soft Machine or The Incredible String Band, weaving them into the rich instrumentals. After the harmonica of the haunting ‘Home Anymore’, the horns of the explosive ‘Love All the Population’ (lying somewhere between The Flaming Lips and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) kick in to provide a more reflective passage along with the soulful hippie interlude ‘Ain%27t No Valley Low Enough’ and the more melancholy ‘True Colours’. Elsewhere, the more direct rock of  ‘Dead Is Dead’ and the gospel of closing track ‘This Is My Night of Compassion’ gently diversify the register. A modern-day crooner/preacher, Fryer and his unique voice excel at every corner. A worthy Qobuzissime. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
