This Norwegian band has enjoyed incredible success that has allowed them to reach wider audiences without the need to distance themselves from the historical foundations their sound is built upon. Now, Kvitravn is back in a new format. Recorded live with no audience, this release sounds even more majestic and extensive than its predecessor. In recent years, dozens of bands have tried performing live without an audience due to the worldwide pandemic that’s caused numerous concert cancellations. Artists have been forced to reinvent themselves in order to keep their fans happy.
First Flight of the White Raven is comprised of two CDs. The first is a copy of Kvitravn, the album nobody can get enough of. The second one features a recording of their famous live performance which leaves no room for error. Of course, there are songs on the live CD that have been taken from Kvitravn (4 in fact). Wardruna know what their fans want. The majority of the live setlist includes favourites from their discography, all the timeless classics that fans love. In many ways, this album could equally be called “The Best of Wardruna” (a concept that’s sure to get your audience going when you’re on stage).
Featuring one song from Skald (Voluspá), and eight others from their Runaljod triptych (four of which come from Yggdrasil), Wardruna sweeps through their entire discography without skipping over a single time period. The performance is masterful from start to finish and really showcases this band who are at the very top of their game. As always, they avoid all the clichés surrounding the Vikings, dodging themes of brutality and grandiosity. However, what really shines here is the subtlety of the compositions that aren’t subjected to any outrageous post-production.
From the subtlety of the choruses to the beautiful mix of vocals and traditional instruments, everything comes together so organically in this release, expressing a deep sombreness without foregoing the beauty of simplicity. Wardruna may have inspired many others to step into the Nordic folk music scene, but no other band holds a candle to them. First Flight of the White Raven is proof of that. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
